I have been painting pet portraits since my late teens and began painting miniatures (for my own dollshouse) about 6 years ago. My favourite mediums are watercolour and gouache and I use a variety of different bases depending on the size of the painting and subject.
Miniature paintings come complete with frame. For the larger paintings, I prefer not to frame these as the glass can be broken and become hazardous during the mailing process.
I work from photographs. I need one or two good quality photos, preferably taken outdoors and from the animal’s level rather than from above and looking down. A lot of the commissions I do are for people who have lost their pets and want a lasting memory to keep and, in these cases, it is sometimes difficult to find a good quality photograph, but I can work around this - I’ve even worked from a tattoo for one commission! It is also helpful to know a little about the personality of the pet and I try to incorporate that character into the painting. If you have a particular period of dollshouse, for example, a Georgian or Regency, let me know and I can recreate the style and background landscape to complement this.
Prices range from £85.00 for a miniature of up to three subjects. For larger portraits prices start from £100.00 for A4-sized and £150.00 for A3-sized, again for up to three subjects. Each portrait takes between six to eight weeks but, if you need your painting sooner, please let me know.
